Is there an easy way to teach our kids the value of putting their phones down?

Well, yes. There is.

Social Emotional Learning, or SEL, is a staple of curriculum, but the value of including music is not always presented.

Lest us not forget: music has super powers!

✅ Music evokes empathy and Understanding

Music has the power to evoke empathy and foster understanding among children. By listening to music from various genres, cultures, and perspectives, children gain exposure to different emotional contexts and experiences.

✅ Music is effective in emotional regulation

Music can have a calming or energizing effect on children’s emotions. Learning to regulate emotions through music helps children develop coping strategies that they can apply in other aspects of their lives.

✅ Music stimulates various areas of the brain and enhances cognitive skills.

Learning to play an instrument, read musical notation, or compose music requires concentration, memory, pattern recognition and problem-solving abilities. These cognitive skills developed through music can transfer to other academic subjects and positively impact overall learning.

Music provides children with a creative outlet to express their unique thoughts, ideas, and identities. This creative expression helps build confidence and positive self-image.

Finally,

✅ Social Connection

Music is a universal language that can bring people together. COllaborative musical activities, such as singing in a choir or playing in a band, encourage children to work as a team, communicate effectively, and develop a sense of belonging.

✅ Music predates language and is as ubiquitous as water. Yet few realize music’s broad value.
