Vying for attention?

Vying for attention - aren’t we more than that?

The internet and social media are amazing examples of the power of technology. But, has it ever occurred to you that us humans, you and me, weren’t prepared to understand tech’s impact? Nor were we prepared to adapt to a landscape that is shifting exponentially, ultimately towards a choice that will be thrust upon us… regardless if we are ready for the challenge or not.

The unbridled growth of AI is both a blessing and a threat depending on what you believe. News flash: our opinion of AI is colored by our biases and experiences. That’s only natural. But, are we ready to make choices that will affect our children, our grandchildren, and their children when we struggle to discern what is real and what is fake today?

We have lost the ability to listen with discernment.

We have lost the ability to assess the nuances of language, speech, and to listen not only to others, but to our own bodies and minds.

What is the answer?

Music.

Why?

Focusing on music, and the pleasure and comfort it creates within you, unconsciously activates your brain. Listening to music, attentively and with purpose contributes to:

➡️ Enhancing your focus and attention
Music captivates our attention and trains your brain to focus on sounds, rhythms, melodies and harmonies. These skills can transfer to other areas of your life, improving your ability to listen to conversations, lectures, or any auditory input.

➡️ Developing auditory perception
Music exposes us to various auditory elements, such as pitch, tone, dynamics and timbre. By focusing your attention your audio perception will be enhanced allowing you to distinguish nuances in speech and significantly improve your ability to listen and comprehend spoken language.

➡️ Improving comprehension
Music conveys emotions, stories, and ideas through lyrics or instrumental arrangements. When you actively engage with music you are essentially exercising your ability to comprehend and interpret auditory information. This translates into better listening comprehension skills that are used in everyday life.

➡️ Strengthening memory and recall
When you listen to music, particularly songs you enjoy or have a personal connection to, it activates neural networks associated with memory and emotional processing. Regularly engaging with music can strengthen these memory pathways and improve your ability to recall and remember auditory information in other contexts.

For decades music has, and continues to be devalued. Partially by technology, but also by a radical shift in human culture. The exponential growth in digital stimuli is so overwhelming we are constantly forced to decide what to listen to based on how it relates to our personal survival. The reason , imho, why people shout, complain, or behave badly is because of our innate need to be heard above the noise. Sadly there are opportunistic souls who take advantage of our malaise for personal gain. This approach will not end well for any of us.

➡️ There is an alternative.

Music not only improves listening skills, music can lower your blood pressure, your heart rate, return your lungs to normal breathing patterns, reduce the amount of adrenaline in your body and, last but not least, release dopamine in your brain which will make you feel better.

Vying for attention is a natural response to feeling threatened. Music is an ubiquitous tool that can be used to reduce that threat.

More music = feel better.
